“Do small things, with great love.” –Mother Theresa.
The same sentiment is expressed in the new children‟s book Grampy and Me by Suzanne Holko, the story of a young girl who befriends and “adopts” the next-door neighbor as her beloved “Grampy.”
“The simple joys in life can be unintentionally lost in the stuff," says Holko. “Grampy and Me brings forth the joy that stems from unconditional love, and is a heartwarming story with no boundaries of time.”
Grampy and Me shares the heartwarming, true story of Suzanne's daughter (portrayed here as "Emily" ), and her endearing relationship with a neighbor whom she adopted as her "Grampy". The essence of their relationship is captured not only in words, but also in the photographs that convey the genuine bond they shared. Little Emily so loved to help her Grampy! From picking potatoes to feeding the ponies, they loved doing simple things together. Whether working together in Grampy's garden, riding the neighbor's pony, or sharing giggles and watermelon on the
I was given the opportunity to read and review Grampy and Me. As I began reading, I was overwhelmed with emotion. As a parent, and someone who lost a grandfather early in life, my heart was warmed as I read about this special bond between a little girl and her neighbor, each of them filling a void in each other's life. While this was a special read for me, my kids also recognized the value in reading this book. It encourages finding joy in the little things and strengthening the bonds they have with others. Grampy And Me is a quick read and it held Logan and Sam's attention, start to finish. It was easy for Logan (he's nine) to read. They LOVED the old photographs, which made the story feel more real. It was far different from the illustrated stories they are used to. This book was special and every page brought a smile. I think it would be a great gift for any child. It can help a child cope with grandparents that live far away by encouraging relationships with others and it can also help children understand the beauty of simplicity.
